Saint Leo University held its grand opening of its new Atlanta Center in Gwinnett County, GA on May 31st. The Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies and the Atlanta Chapter - American Jewish Committee were represented at the ceremony. Judy Marx, Executive Director, Atlanta Chapter -AJC and Tom Buckridge, Interim Director of the Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies joined University President Arthur F. Kirk Jr. and other dignitaries and guests in opening the first St. Leo facility in Atlanta focused on civilian students. The University since 1975 has had a presence at Fort McPhearson, a U.S. Army base southwest of Atlanta but this new facility is the first such venture to attract a growing civilian population in an area of the South that is rapidly expanding. We anticipate looking at ways in which Catholic-Jewish education and dialogue may be brought to such educational centers as we continue to grow in our reach.

Dear e-Subscriber,

As we approach summer, the time of planning for the Center's schedule (beginning July 1st) is coming upon us but at the same time we see a ten-fold current demand for educational and dialogue programs reaching our desk from a wide body of constituents (more on that below).

While it has been 40 years since 'Nostra Aetate' which opened a whole new window onto Catholic-Jewish relations, we never want to lose the sense of urgency in our mission. I'm reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's words in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 23, 1963 as to never losing one's sense of 'the now' when it comes to one's cause...

"We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of 'now.' This is not the time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism." It's in that spirit we shall see a busy summer at the Center.

- Tom Buckridge

  • Walking God's Paths - Interest Builds!
  • Religious Ed Teachers & Leaders; Are you planning your congregation's religious ed programming for next year? Then please consider using the respected six- part video series, "Walking God's Paths: Christians and Jews in Dialogue" (WGP), developed by Boston College's Center for Christian-Jewish Learning in partnership with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our own Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies offers support for WPG programming as described in our WGP link on our website (click to the WGP logo).

This site includes endorsements (click below) from both Jewish and Catholic leaders as well as information for purchasing the series DVD and a print version of the free online study guide and leaders resources.

  • Summer Heating Up
  • Summertime is often thought of as a period of relaxation, but this will not be the case at the Center. We have a student lecture planned for St. Petersburg College students studying creative problem solving and will be using interfaith relations as a case study on the topic. At least five separate requests for lectures and seminars have been received and are being addressed as well as a Jewish literature workshop, programs to work with an area museum...etc...etc.

Yes, summer planning season is upon us but we are also executing programs as well. Much more to some in future editions of our e-Letters!
